Wonderful power of Turmeric

Hello dear ones!

I'm sure you're all familiar with a spice thats yellow as the sun, Turmeric.
I'd like to elaborate on it a bit today, and share with you its health superpowers!
Frequently used in Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric's existence has been known for thousands of years and was originally utilized for cosmetic purposes and as a dye. Later, people found that it possessed health-enhancing qualities when consumed. The active ingredient curcumin is found in the rhizome, or root, of the turmeric plant and is mainly responsible for the health benefits turmeric produces.

It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.
Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.

Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
Is a natural liver detoxifier.
May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain. Research is beginning to show that turmeric may be effective at protecting against neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Epidemiological studies show that levels of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s are very low in elderly Indian populations, where turmeric is a common spice.
May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.

Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.

Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.

Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.

May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Further adding on to turmeric’s cancer-fighting abilities, the spice has also been shown to help prevent breast cancer. Curcumin has been found to possess properties that reduce the expression of deadly molecules within cancer cells, and can potentially slow the spread of breast cancer.

According to ayurvedic traditions, turmeric can soothe the stomach and balance an upset digestion. Just take a small spoonful of turmeric and stir it in a cup of yogurt right after lunch. In Japan they have a whole row of turmeric preparations for curing hangovers. And in a recent animal study, extracts of turmeric root reduced secretion of acid from the stomach and protected against injuries such as inflammation along the stomach or intestinal walls and ulcers from alcohol.

It also helps with GERD (heartburn), stomach acidity, a nervous stomach and even many eye diseases.
A whole ton of useful health benefits! Is it worth a try? I think so!
So I drink it twice daily, have done so for about a year now and Ill provide you with two different ways to try it.

Tea;

2 cups of water

1 teaspoon powdered turmeric

1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger

1 large teaspoon honey (or more to taste)

Juice of 1/4 a lemon
pinch of ground black pepper

Just mix all ingredients in and pour the hot water over them, mixing. After 5 minutes, strain through a fine sieve and enjoy!

Milkshake:

Mix 2 tablespoons of turmeric with 1 teaspoon honey (or more) and 1/4 cup of hot but not boiling water. Add to that a cup of milk or almond milk and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper. Enjoy!

Even if it only does half of all that stuff it is still amazing. Wow. I have been hearing a lot about it. I would try the yogurt mixture I think. What does it taste like? Bitter?
I know someone who lives in Hawaii and she puts it in her daily fruit shakes.

Hello Kasia:
This is an exceedingly well researched and informative post. We had absolutely no idea of all the different properties of tumeric nor of the way it is used in medical research. Most interesting.
